Haiti Matters

The devastating earthquake that struck our neighbor, Haiti, on January 12 demands an educational as well as a humanitarian response. CGEL encourages all educators to find ways to discuss this ongoing situation with their students.

CGEL is currently in the process of developing its own “Haiti Matters” project. Check back again soon for more details.

Teaching About Haiti

Under any circumstances, Haiti is a fascinating country with an incredibly rich history and culture, and strong connections to the United States. The tragedy of the earthquake and its aftermath, unfortunately, have put Haiti front and center. Any teacher, regardless of grade level or content area, can find some way to teach about Haiti and the Haitian people.

Here are some websites that provide useful information, resources, lesson plans, and weblinks on Haiti for K-12 teachers:

Donations

CGEL makes no recommendations regarding where to send donations for Haiti relief and reconstruction. You can check out these sites, which represent some of the larger efforts.

Check back later for news of CGEL's own response to the Haiti crisis.  If you are interested in getting involved, please contact Sally Schwartz at sally@dc-cgel.org or call 202-362-2152 right away.

Thank you for caring.
