Americans Promoting Study Abroad (APSA) announces the names of five DCPS students selected for its six-week Chinese language and culture program in Beijing this summer.
In a highly competitive process, this year’s applicants were required to have completed at least one academic year of Chinese prior to the summer program, and to have maintained a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average. In addition, the review panel weighed each student’s involvement in school-based and community activities, leadership qualities, commitment to the program, and potential to serve as a positive representative of his/her country, city, and school.
The very lucky students are:
• Olivia Carrion – School Without Walls (9th grade)
• Lyric Carter – Phelps (10th grade)
• Jacquan Clark – Roosevelt Senior High School (10th grade)
• Sydney Hall – School Without Walls (10th grade)
• Jordan Howie – School Without Walls (9th grade)
Our five DCPS students will be joined this summer by 30-35 other high school students from public schools in Rochester (NY), Atlanta, Boston, Houston, Denver, and New York City. After a full-group orientation in Washington, DC, they will travel to China for an intensive and challenging program of Chinese language instruction, culture classes, field trips, community service, project-based learning, and visits to international businesses and other work settings.
This is the third year that CGEL and DCPS have participated in APSA's China Scholars Program. Read more about the program and the experiences of the past DC China Scholars. And check back in June to follow the students’ progress as they discover China, improve their Chinese language skills, and experience life as global citizens.
Great thanks to APSA for their ongoing commitment to the young people of DC.
